Twitter – social media

You might know that @mjbickerton #Ilovetwitter and I’ve coined a phrase “catch you on the #twitterside”.

If you have been using Twitter for a while, you’d know what I’m referring to, or at least be perfectly clear about what I’m saying.

There’s a lot of “jargon” to know about when using Twitter, although it’s quite simple to use. Below you’ll find the basics, and if you want to know more, well, you’ll have to check out our SlideShare presentation.

Twitter Social Media Terms:

• Tweet – a message with a max 140 characters in length
• Follower- those who follow your tweets
• Following – those whose tweets you follow
• Direct Message – sending a 1 on 1 private message
• @Reply – a comment to one user, but visible to the public
• ReTweet (RT) – replying or sharing of someone else’s post to your followers
• Hashtag (#) – #help track specific conversations, you can follow a specific #hashtag through Twitter search
• Tweet-Up – a social meeting of Twitterers
• Follow Friday (FF) – Twitter tradition, every Friday, recommend users to others by including their username and the #FF in a tweet

I think that covers the basic list of Jargon that you need to know to be comfortable on Twitter. A lot happens on a daily basis, after all there are over 106 Million users.
