Hashtag Contests

It’s hard to escape hashtags. They are everywhere on social media. That’s one of the many benefits of running hashtag contests. For businesses looking to grow their social followings, a hashtag contest is a great way to generate user generated content (UGC). Need more reasons to use contest marketing?

A hashtag contest can be utilized on almost any social media platform. Here are some tips from each social network:

Instagram Hashtag Contests

• Standard rules – including acknowledgement that your contest is “no way sponsored, endorsed administered by, or associated with Instagram” (be sure to include a link in your profile)
• Do not inaccurately tag content or encourage people to do the same

Twitter Hashtag Contests

• Standard rules – including acknowledgement that your contest is not sponsored, endorsed administered by, or associated with Twitter
• Discourage people from creating multiple accounts (include in the rules)
• Discourage people from tweeting the same message (Twitter recommends limit entrants to one entry per day)

Facebook Hashtag Contests

• Standard rules – including acknowledgement that your contest is not sponsored, endorsed administered by, or associated with Facebook
• The contest has to be on a business page
• You can ask people to comment on a post or a page, message a page or Like a post or page
• You cannot ask people to simply like a page to enter, or share a page to enter
  • Also cannot ask people to tag themselves in a photo of your product or share to a friend’s page for more entries

Pinterest Hashtag Contests

• Standard rules – including acknowledgement that your contest is not sponsored, endorsed administered by, or associated with Pinterest
• Encourage people to submit one entry, with by pin or by board
